On Friday, September 25, 2009 three local area boys were in a sand pit south of Fillmore doing some 4-wheeling. The boys had pulled up next to a sand dune and noticed a bone protruding from the sand hill. The boys dug around and located several other bones and what appeared to be a human skull. Millard County Sheriff’s Office was called and Deputies responded to the scene. Deputies were able to excavate many human bones that appeared to be very old and brittle. The remains were sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for further identification.
Mr. Ron Rood of the State Archeologist Division of Antiquities advised the Millard County Sheriff’s Office that the recovered bones are definitely Native American in origin and are believed to be over 1000 years old. The State Archeologist will be following up on this case.
